So, if you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you have probably seen my numerous pictures of my breakfast smoothies! I have been obsessed lately. It all started with Booster Juice (there’s one at my Uni campus), but paying almost $10 a drink was killing my budget, so I decided to just buy my own blender and make my own. I’ve had previous blenders, but I recently bought a single-serve blender by Hamilton Beach strictly for my smoothies. Best purchase I’ve made in a long time! It was around $20!! It is perfect because it is compact and easy to clean (granted, I only use it for smoothies.) I have it sitting on my kitchen counter and I use it almost everyday.

I have subbed in a super yummy smoothy every morning instead of a coffee (yay!). It gives me so much energy, keeps me feeling full (I hate feeling hungry an hour after you eat breakfast), and it contains so many fruits, fibre & vitamins. I don’t think I’ll be getting tired of this anytime soon!

Smoothie Tips:

  • Freeze your own fruit – When my bananas (or any fruit, really) get a little too ripe, I cut them up and put them in freezer bags for the freezer. That way, they are ready whenever I need them. This is also a great way to save those too-ripe strawberries that you haven’t eaten.
  • Have your smoothie ingredients handy – I have my smoothie tools (including the blender) on my kitchen counter and ingredients in my fridge, ready each morning. This saves me so much time – I never have to rustle around looking for where I put my flax seeds, etc.
  • Experiment! You can literally put whatever you want in your smoothie. Don’t be afraid to experiment and throw in whatever you feel like! Use different types of fruit (my favourites are blackberries, avocado & papaya (new fave)), or different types of milk or juice (almond milk, soy, pomegranite juice, & coconut water). I’m going to start experimenting with green smoothies soon! You got any good tips for that? Share them, please!

How To Make Maria’s Smoothies:

Put in blender in this order:

  • Frozen milk or juice (I put this in an ice cube tray the night before in place of ice cubes. I don’t like watery smoothies! You can use different types for this if you’d like: soy milk, almond, chocolate almond milk (that’s what I used for the banana-chocolate up there.))
  • Frozen banana (I use half every morning – this makes the smoothie super creamy)
  • Fruit(s) of your choice! (but be sure to cut them up into smaller pieces to help your blender)
  • 1 Tbsp of ground flax seed
  • Low-fat Greek yogurt with honey (I like this because it is a little sweet and tart.) I use about 2-3 big scoops with my tablespoon, but see what you prefer. Experiment with different flavours of yogurt! I prefer Greek yogurt over regular yogurt because it is high in protein. Perfect for breakfast.
  • Cold milk  (cover about half of the ingredients in your blender)
  • Pulse your blender until it becomes uniform in colour – usually 4-5 pulses, and then just blend until it’s totally smooth. Taste to see if you want to add anything else and that’s it! You’re done!

Try making this one morning and see what you think! I bet you’ll want to keep making them and trying out different flavours! I’m beginning to have a pretty good list of smoothie recipes I’ve tried and loved. (Shall I do a favourite smoothie recipes post?)

The one above is the ‘basic’ and very flexible for experimenting. If you have a killer smoothie recipe, please let me know! I want to try your favourite :)

Back in March, my Fiancé and I had a chance to visit the Game of Thrones Exhibit at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. We are huge fans of the show on HBO so we both jumped at this chance (and it was free admission so of course we went!).

It was really cool because we had a chance to sit at the Iron Throne and take a few pics on it! Kris and I are experts at self-timed shots (it’s how we take most of our photoshoots together) so this was just another day in our lives ;)

Photography wasn’t allowed in the actual exhibition, but if you know me, you also know I am bad at following “no photography” rules. Eeeep. Here’s a few pics from my Instagram (add me: MariaAguilarca):

Houses of Westeros. Putting up the blog post on the Exhibit today! I started squealing when I saw the They also had Ned's head on the wall. Pretty freakin' cool, right?

And TIFF, of course, did an interview with George R.R. Martin and since I am still trying to make my way through the books, this was super interesting for me!

Did you go to the Exhibit? What did you think? I thought it was fantastic, especially for a free exhibit. It was nice to see some of the actual things they used on set and to see them up close. I was most excited to see Renly’s crown – it is one of my favourite things – it is so freakin’ beautiful, don’t you think?

Are you a Game of Thrones fan? Let me know, I am always looking for new people to talk to about it! I am that annoying person that won’t shut up about the show and the books. No shame. Haha.

There are just certain phrases that people say that grinds my effin’ gears. And I can’t take it anymore! Here’s a rant-y post on things people say that annoy me! I’m not a Bitter Betty – I don’t mean to offend… If you’re guilty of saying these, I know it’s not your fault that you give off this douche-y impression when you say these things. I’m only slightly judging you, don’t worry ;)

  • FML / Fuck My Life – This has been around for awhile and it has always bothered me. I know it’s seen as a “joke” or that people don’t “really mean it”, but it just bothers me. It is obviously a personal thing… It’s hard for me to ever say “fuck my life” without feeling like I’ve disrespected my life, which I am so incredibly grateful for. Yeah, yeah I take that one too seriously. Oh wells.
  • Just sayin’” – I shudder when I read/hear this. It is so unnecessary! Defined as (UD), “a term coined to be used at the end of something insulting or offensive to take the heat off you when you say it.” I believe it is Gen Y’s new “No offense, but…” which is equally annoying for me. I have a problem with people not owning up to their criticisms or negative comments. Just say what you want to say and own up to it! Just because you added “just sayin’” to your asshole comment, it doesn’t make you less of an asshole. Now you’re a douchebag, too.
  • To be honest” – So, what’s the other option?
  • Real talk” – I cringed when I typed that. Ouch. Leaving out the fact that it makes no sense, grammatically, “real talk” is supposed to evoke sincerity, right? If you feel the need to add ‘real talk’ to whatever you are telling me, I probably won’t trust you. To me, it is like urbanized-used-car-salesman lingo.

And a few from my Twitter replies (I am guilty of saying a few of these! Hilarious!):

This is a fun post, so join in the fun and comment on sayings that annoy you, too! Hell, call me out on the annoying things I say (I know there is a lot of them)!

The awesome folks at Doritos sent me a not-so-little package the other day and in it were a few bags of the new Doritos flavour! It’s Smoky Chipotle BBQ and they say it’s bigger, bolder & thicker – and after trying it, I have to agree! (They are HUGE!) Now, I don’t normally eat Doritos (not exactly “clean eating” tee hee), but I do like to indulge every now and then – usually during parties and BBQs. I don’t know how… but someone always brings a bag of Doritos along! (Random fact: My fave Doritos flavour is Sweet Chili Heat!)

Anyway with the help of Doritos, I’m able to do a giveaway! You will get the same package that I have!

It came with some pretty sweet ass t-shirts that I know I’m going to be rocking at the gym! Don’t be jelly of my muscles, ok?

How to win this sexy package valued at $100 (Canadian residents only!):

  1. Follow me on Twitter if you aren’t already!
  2. Tweet this: “I wanna get #Jacked with Doritos and MariaAguilar.ca! Gimme @MariaAguilar!”
  3. (Optional) Like Doritos Canada on Facebook! Once you are following them, you can play the games they have on there and be entered to win a MINI Cooper Countryman (Don’t worry, I was just as confused as you are to hear that Doritos is giving away a car! It will all make sense once you visit their Facebook page, I promise!)

Aaaand that’s it! I’ll be picking a random winner tomorrow morning! (That’s April 27, 2012). Good luck, babes!

Update: The winner is…

Congrats!! Goes to show that even when you’re the last one to enter a contest, you can still win! lol How did I pick the winner? Easy! I listed the participants on Word and chose a random number using Random.org and the corresponding number is the winner!
